STANDARD 2: Learning Differences
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Specifically as a music educator, learning differences can greatly define a classroom. Some students will excel while others will lag behind. It is important to be able to depict what pace the students are learning, individually and overall. As a music educator, the ability to gauge what is best for the students is part of being an effective teacher. Being an effective teacher also means understanding what differences there may be in cultures and home lives. All of these differences can make instruction harder to generalize and will need to be manufactured to be more accessible for each individual.
My current knowledge of the challenges of learning differences is limited to discussions in my music education class and field experience. So far, we have discussed different methods of assessment to determine a student's comprehension and skill level. Also, methods have been described in effect of helping students who are struggling. For example, if a student is having difficulties matching pitch, I have discussed and utilized a physical representation aesthetically will aid the student in learning if the pitch is higher or lower. Other differences challenge students when school isn't the main focus due to outside factors.
To cultivate my knowledge of learner development, I have the remainder of practicum field work and all of my student teaching placement. Being able to experience the application of learner development will greatly increase my knowledge and understanding of each students strengths and weaknesses. Through my time at student teaching I will have daily opportunities to adapt and further increase my knowledge of individual learner differences and ways to help students be successful.
The document listed below is an in depth project for MUSE 353. The guidelines were to find a song by a female artist and discuss the historic background and then outline a lesson plan with the same song.
