STANDARD 5: Application of Content
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
Effective music educators are musically literate with a broad understanding and skill in music. The literacy maintained by a music educator is thoroughly shared with students effectively. Students are able to clearly understand the concepts being presented with strong connections between the concept and examples provided. It is the responsibility of the teacher to inspire students to engage in learning and creativity. This allows the students creativity to blossom and builds motivation to learn more about the subject.
I feel my education this far has provided me with a handful of experiences relevant to application of content. I have planned and taught many lessons now, each adding a new concept to how the lesson is taught. Each lesson has taught me something new about my understanding. I also have learned that I have a hard time leading a lesson and coming up with questions that activate critical thinking. Any question i have to encourage critical thinking is typically pulled from my lesson plan. With time, this skill will continue to grow and I won't need to rely so heavily on my plan for this specific detail.
As I continue my education here at Ball State, I will gain more experience with in-class teachings as well as experiences in the field. In student teaching I will be given daily opportunities to see this standard in action. I will be able find new ways to encourage student motivation and involvement and find ways to help students foster their own music appreciation and literacy.
Adolescent students are in the process of learning how to communicate with those around them but still generally believe the world revolves around them. As a teacher, this is challenging because students will ignore or disregard material they don’t the find material relevant to their lives. As a music educator however, this is a manageable task. Providing students with a potentially personal connection to the lesson encourages them to follow along with the lesson and understand the connection better. This will also reinforce the lesson when there is a personal connection because they can constantly relate it back to their experiences and preferences. Another aspect of this, is providing a variety of angles for students to approach a topic or concept. Giving them several doors to the same room, so to speak, allows them to come to the same conclusion and understanding a number of ways.

CMUP
This document is from MUSE 353. The purpose of this assignment was to create a number of lesson plans relevant to one another as well as focus on concept and history of the piece. This project was eye opening and greatly increased my understanding of students engagement.
